This is a ash tree damaged by ash borer bugs. The bug digs holes into the trunk of the trees to lay their eggs inside. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae feed on the trees nutrients which in return take those much needed nutrients away from the tree resulting in the tree becoming brittle and sick, and eventually causing it to die.
